Brand Photography Explained: What is it, and how will it benefit my business?

Brand photography.

I toss this phrase around a lot on my website and in my social media. What falls under this umbrella term, you ask? Here are ten examples – with visuals, of course – to help you better understand what the hell I’m referring to. #themoreyouknow

Traditional Headshots: Formal

What most people think of when they hear headshots: person wears a suit and looks at the camera in a professional setting.

Best for: Corporate and government employees. Uses: website; bio headshot; LinkedIn profile picture.

Traditional Headshots: Casual

Take the standard corporate headshot and remove the suit.  Casual attire, a bit of laughter, and perhaps a few wider shots for variety. Can be done with a simple backdrop or in the setting of your choosing.

Best for: Bloggers; employees of small companies, MLMs, or big ‘fun’ companies like Google.
Uses: website; ‘about me’ page; bio headshot; LinkedIn profile picture.

Non-Traditional Headshots: Fun

This is where we really break the mold and move into the non-traditional by adding an element of fun. With each successive type of headshot session, I incorporate all the styles that come before it. For example, a client would come away from this session with standard, casual, and fun headshots.

Best for: Quirky entrepreneurs; bloggers.
Uses: website; ‘about me’ page; blog posts; social media; bio headshot for submissions.

Non-Traditional Headshots: Lifestyle + Portrait

The most common type of headshot session that I photograph. Consider this a portrait session with just yourself. These are my favorite types of headshots because they’re not so headshot-y and can be used anywhere from your website to your Tindr profile. Also see Business: Lifestyle + Day in the Life / Stock, because these often go together.

Best for: Entrepreneurs; bloggers; makers.
Uses: website; ‘about me’ page; blog posts; social media; personal uses.

Business: Lifestyle + Day in the Life / Stock

Possibly my favorite type of brand photography, this is also the most difficult to describe. It’s like stock photography, except you’re in it? Like a portrait session, except you’re by yourself? Or maybe it’s like documentary lifestyle photography, except you’re working? There’s honestly no limit to what you can do in business lifestyle photos. These sessions also usually incorporate lifestyle headshots, as described above.

Best for: Entrepreneurs; bloggers; makers.
Uses: website; ‘about me’ page; blog posts; social media; personal uses.
